July 2004

Most of you know that I broke my finger about a month ago and it was so bad that I had to have surgery. Well, I just got back from the doctor and was able to snap a few pictures. I got snaps of the x-ray also.

This is a slightly out-of-focus shot of my finger from the top. You can see the stich area and all the pins. Also, check out the hole in the middle of my nail. That’s the drill spot!

Here’s a side x-ray of the finger. You can see all the cool details of my recovery.

Because they want the closest dang parking space…

Honestly, how many times have you’ve been leaving a store and have someone follow you for a parking spot that is only marginally closer to the entrance? Whattup wif dat, G?

Tonight, I was coming out of Harris Teeter and getting into my car when I noticed a lady was sitting in her car, blinker on, waiting for my spot. There was an open space three spots away. She waited an extra minute for me to leave so she could have a spot that was, oh, fifteen feet closer.

I’ll bet when she gets home she’ll jump on her treadmill and do a couple miles.

Randy Fletcher has had a bad year.

In January, he came home sick (I’m sure he wished the paper wouldn’t have mentioned the diarrhea) to find his wife in bed with his neighbor.
In March, he totalled his mint-condition 56 Chevy that he had spent years fixing.
His 12 year old dog died in May.
And to top it off, on July 15th, the courts finalized his divorce from his wife where she basically got the house and most of his savings.

Two days after his divorce, Randy won the State Lottery!

Karma kicks ass!

Question is: How long before this becomes a country song? Or, maybe it already is?

*** Begin Update ***
Who says the wysiblog doesn’t listen? After hearing the gripes about the Miami song, I decided to take another listen. While I definitely think it’s a good song, I totally agree with the posters that I’ve overrated it. I’m dropping it below Georgia Tech into the 5th spot. I still think it’s better than the others. Cool?
*** End Update ***

I’ve been playing NCAA 2005 lately (see my first impressions) and one of the cool things about the game is that all the schools fight songs are in the game. It’s a lot of fun to play with some school and when you score a touchdown you get to here their fight song. It’s good atmosphere and helps you get into the setting.

But one thing I’ve noticed, with regards to the rest of the leagues out there, the ACC fight songs are big sux! They just don’t compare. Heck, Bowling Green’s fight song is better than most of the songs in the league…

So, to help all you ACC fans along, I’ve ranked the various fight songs, provided a link to the song and give you an explanation of why I placed them in that slot. The songs that I’m rating aren’t all techically the official “Fight Song” but are the ones you here most when a TD is scored or the one that is most associated with the school. If there are any discrepancies please let me know and I’ll rerank.

Here’s my subjective criteria:
Is it catchy?
Is it energetic?
Is it original?
Does it have that old school college football feel?

1 – Maryland: Maryland Victory - has got everything a fight song needs. Catchy, energetic, original and I swear I thought it was a Big 10 song at first. It’s got a great hook and the build-up and finale are dead on. Because of this, and all you know how painful it is for me to give Maryland any credit, they get the top slot.
2 – Florida State: FSU Fight Song - It’s a great song and really does deserve this high slot but the reason why it’s not higher is that it takes too long to get going. I would ask Old Nole for his perspective on it but when he was there he never really had to play it too much… ;)
3 – Virginia Tech: Tech Triumph - This song is very cool and with the inclusion of Va Tech into the ACC they improve the quality of songs. It’s got a nice melody and really flows well but it just doesn’t have enough umph to get it into the top 3.
4 – Georgia Tech: White and Gold - Great Song! It’s really fun and gets you going. I wish State’s was a little more like this. Nice job! What keeps it in fifth place is that it has too much of a whimsical feel and not enough of a rugged March
5 – Miami: Miami Fight Song - I originally had this song in the number 2 spot but after some more listens I felt that it wasn’t deserving of such high praise. Althouh, I still think it’s a good song.
6 – Wake Forest: Here’s to Wake Forest - It’s everything the Carolina song wishes it could be although it doesn’t quite have that big time football feel. I still like this song and give it a strong rating.
7 – Duke: Blue and White - Wow! I can’t believe Duke actually has a cool song. At one time they were a football powerhouse and we must have heard this song a lot. But since they’re horrible, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it at a game. If the song they place is really “Devil with the Blue Dress” then they go right to next to last.
8 – Clemson: Tiger Rag - Well, this song is pretty good. It’s a nice arrangement and the band performs it well. Although it’s catchy and energetic it’s a rip-off and it doesn’t feel like a college football song. Sorry, Tony.
9 – NC State: Pregame Fight Song - Sigh…I wish it were not so but my beloved Alma Mater has one of the worst fight songs in the league. While it’s energetic and catchy it’s a complete rip-off of the Army Field Artillery March. They don’t even try to rearrange it . The only thing they’ve done is speed it up. It’s a decent song but it just doesn’t stack up. It evokes lots of great memories and I love hearing it at games but that doesn’t make it any better. After putting aside the red colored glasses, I have to give it the ninth spot. Oh, well…
10 – Carolina: TAG! (I’m a TarButt born…) - My only saving grace as a State fan is the fact that Carolina’s song is worse. All the points they get for originality they make up for in sheer suckness. This song is moderately catchy and energetic in a Clay Aiken sort of way. The only way it could be worse is if it was less energetic and a rip-off of an existing song which brings us to…
11 Virginia: Good Old Song - This is a victory/fight song? What the heck? It’s just that lame New Year’s song that everybody tries to sing when they’re drunk and dribbling booze down their tux. It’s slow and as exciting as watching the acorn fall in downtown Raleigh. Whoopie! Let’s pop the cork on the Champagne bottles for this lame piece of junk that passes as Virginia’s fight song.

Oh, if you want to here the best fight song in the land, you can listen to the Notre Dame Victory March. Also, another great song is Michigan’s The Victors. As much as I dislike Notre Dame, no song gets me more pumped for college football than theirs.

I also have to give a big shout out to College Football Fight Songs for providing a one stop source for links to all these songs.

Art Schlister, who once played for the Indianapolis Colts and played for Ohio State in college, is being sentenced to 8 years for a ticket scam to high profile sporting events.

He’s had gambling problems all his life and ruined his career because he couldn’t stop. Let’s hope prison “rehabilitates” him and he can start doing some good in this world instead of ripping people off.

Yesterday, I picked this years college football title from EA Sports: NCAA 2005 for the Xbox.

When I got home, I decided to fire it up for a quick game. The game looks and plays pretty much like last years, which is a good thing, but there are definitely some graphical, gameplay and sound enhancements.

Graphics wise the players are smoother and seem to move appropriately in given situations. Like an ankle tackle will show a guy tripping or a shoulder smash will show a player getting leveled (very cool effect). Also, runners will plow through guys and you’ll see cool broken tackles and misses that seem real. One of the neat new looks is when a runner is turning a corner and off-balance. You’ll see him put his hand down to maintain his momentum. It’s a great, realistic effect. The game is definitely improving itself each year in this regard.

The sound is pretty much the same except that crowd noise is a little bit louder and more varied. The fight songs are great as usual, although they do cut NC State’s a little short. Oh well.

Gameplay has been tweeked a little bit. As the home team, you can actively pump up the stadium noise to make it hard for the opponent to call the play or an audible. Also, you can quickly add plays to your audible selection on the fly. Another cool tweak is the matchup feature that will show which players are rattled or composed for both teams. This allows you to take advantage of weaknesses in the lineups. For example, if the matchup showed that the opposing defensive line was weak on the right side, you could just call plays to run right over that guy. Very cool with regards to game flow.

In my first game, I played NC State vs Carolina. Based on talent alone, it shouldn’t have been close but that’s why we play the game!

On my first posession, I ran it down their throat with TA but we stalled inside the ten and had to settle for a field goal. NC State 3 – Carolina 0

Carolina then quickly scored on a long pass play. I was reeling and didn’t know what to expect the rest of the way. NC State 3 – Carolina 7

I settled my guys down and scored two straight TDs with TA getting both on short plunges. NC State 17 – Carolina 7

Right before the half, Carolina started marching down the field and was poised to get another Touchdown to bring the score within three when Andre Maddox intercepted a pass and went 79 yards for the score. That was the back breaker. Halftime score: NC State 24 – Carolina 7

The second half didn’t prove much better for our Smurf friends with TA getting two more Touchdowns. With the game in hand and 1:00 minute left on the clock, I had the ball back. Did I show mercy and take a knee? Heck no, I ran up the score on the most hated rival of the Wolfpack. Jay Davis hit a long strike to TJ Williams for a TD in the closing seconds. Nice!

Final Score: NC State 45 – Carolina 7

Player of the game was TA McClendon with 160 yards rushing and 4 TDs. That sounds about right. Woot!

Overall, I’m happy with the new version of the game. It looks and plays great. If I get time, I’ll do a full review later.

I’ve decided to switch over to a new blogging software.

As with jt.net, the look and feel will be evolving over the next days and weeks.

Hope you like it better.
