Ok, so I was talking with JT.Net last week about his post about JG’s post. So yeah, I’m posting about a post about a post. Gotta love the internet.
Basically, these posts are all about how America is fat and lazy and how it sucks…blah blah blah. While I may or may not agree with all the assertions or comments from that post, I’m not going to get into it. What you believe and what you expect is your personal philosopy. I can’t or won’t change it. So, instead I’m going to change myself. That’s right I’m about to throw out some resolutions.
Really, I don’t want to whine about others and yet not do anything about it so instead of whining, I’m just gonna do. Here’s my resolutions for the new year that you, my 2 or 3 readers might find useful yourself. These are geared to making me a better person, citizen and American.
Vote – that’s right, vote. I know it sounds simple but what I really mean is vote in all of the local elections and not just the big ones with national implications. Local decisions and politics affect our lives much more than what the national government does and therefore we should pay more attention to them.
Read – I read some but I really need to do a lot more. I’m not talking about the comics, sports section or Maxim (although they’re fine), I mean books on philosophy and government. Political and social articles and magazines, etc. Anything that gets the mind rolling and thinking.
Write – Jamie lamented not having enough time to think about what he can or should do to be a more involved and informed citizen. I actually think his blogging about his concerns is a good start. Writing helps formalize your thoughts and add clarity. Whether you blog or keep a personal journal, writing is an important way of conveying your ideas. I’m going to definitely blog and journal more.
Volunteer – I don’t do this and I need to. It’s a great way to get connected with your community and to give to people who are in need. Many people think that it’s up to the government to take care of people but I completely disagree. But, I do believe that our communities need to take care of our own and by volunteering you can provide an immediate impact. So, join me in doing this.
I purposely avoided political discussions because it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. People will disagree on issues but we can be partners in making our own communities better. It all starts with me/you.
Happy New Year
Scott
